A Year of Zen (Den)

After their first year of implementation, the Zen Den and calming corners at Rivera Elementary School were a success for students and teachers alike! In our survey, 86% of teachers who participated in the project reported that the spaces helped reduce students’ stress levels and 93% of teachers reported that the spaces helped their students cope with their emotions. All teachers recommended the spaces be installed at other schools, one stating that “all schools should have one.” Teachers enjoyed using the spaces to decompress, one stating, “I, myself, like to go to the Zen Den. It helps me relax.”

The Zen Den is a perfect napping spot, complete with pillows and blankets!

Some teachers recommended adding certain features, like galaxy lights, to the Zen Den and clarifying the space’s purpose for students in younger grades who opted for play time in their classroom’s calming corner. Teachers stated the calming corners served as a space for an individual where the Zen Den could be used as “a whole class meditation moment.” In the post-survey, one teacher shared that the spaces were great for kids with special needs, highlighting the importance of providing calm, cozy, and quieter spaces in schools for students to rest if overstimulated.

The ZFCPHP looks forward to continuing our partnerships with local elementary schools to promote student and staff well-being. For questions about the initiative or to get involved, please reach out to Sabrina Plattner, Health Educator Sr. (plattner@arizona.edu).
