Internship and Volunteer Opportunities
U of A students have the exciting opportunity to volunteer or earn internship credit while working with our center. This hands-on experience allows them to hone their skills in collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and gain valuable expertise spanning health promotion, health education, and research.
Summer Opportunites
Healthy2BME Camp

Healthy 2B Me (H2BM) is a wellness camp for underserved youth in Tucson, reaching over 300 children since 2013. The camp focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles (diet, physical activity and tobacco use), self-care, kindness, and positive relationships through lessons led by experts from the University of Arizona, ZFCPHP, and the Tucson community. Designed for children ages 7-11, each week-long session covers key health and wellness themes.
Eligibility:
- Outgoing, energetic, and organized U of A undergraduate students
- Interest in working with children and teaching public health wellness messaging
- Assist in implementing and organizing the camp schedule
- Lead specific lessons and adapt curriculum
- Reinforce camp materials and support overall camp activities

Student Transformative Experiences to Progress Underrepresented Professionals (STEP-UP) Summer Research Program
STEP-UP is a multidisciplinary initiative led by the Cancer Prevention and Control and Health Disparities Programs’ faculty at the University of Arizona Comprehensive Cancer Center. STEP-UP is a PAID 12-week summer research program funded by the National Cancer Institute to provide an innovative and transformative research experience to those interested in cancer prevention and control.

Eligibility:
- Current Undergraduate or Master’s Student (must be enrolled as an Undergraduate Junior, Undergraduate Senior or Master's level student during the fall semester of the program year).
- If you are transitioning to graduate school in the fall semester of the program year, you must provide proof of application or acceptance.
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above
- U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
- Able to commit to the full 12-week summer research experience. Other employment, courses, commitments, vacations, etc. are prohibited during the program. Please ensure you can comply with a full time schedule before you apply.
- We particularly encourage applications from students from underrepresented, disadvantaged, non-traditional or first-generation college backgrounds or who attend schools with limited research opportunities.
Fall & Spring Opportunities
ZFCPHP at Lapan College and Career Club
Our partnership with Lapan, an organization dedicated to student success and well-being in South Tucson, offers a variety of programs for middle and high school students in the community. With a mission to create equitable opportunities for academic success, our collaboration has supported services like the soccer club, art club, pet therapy, and garden club, helping students build life skills in an after-school environment. As we continue to grow together, our partnership will evolve through learning, listening, and community-driven development.
Eligibility:
- U of A graduate or undergraduate students
- Interested in adolescent education or health promotion
- Weekly on-site availability Monday - Thursday, ranging from 2:00 - 6:00 PM
- Weekly Team Meeting
- Leadership and interpersonal skills

Healthy Habits Tucson
Healthy Habits Tucson provides an after-school intergenerational program to reduce childhood obesity and it's long term health risks. Focusing primarily on elementary age school students and older adults to reduce health disparities.
Interns will be required to be available on:
- Monday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:45 PM at the Jim and Vicky Click Boys and Girls Clubhouse
- Thursday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:45 PM at the Roy Drachman Boys and Girls Clubhouse
Interns will be teaching youth hands-on, fun, and interactive lessons in nutrition, wellness, and physical activity, alongside adults aged 55 and older. They will be promoting a healthy environment at school, home, and in the community.

Healthy Schools Tucson
Healthy Schools Tucson is a health education program focused on preventing childhood obesity. It emphasizes the development of healthy lifestyle habits—particularly in nutrition, physical activity, and overall wellness—among middle school students within a school setting.
Through this internship, participants will gain valuable skills, including:

Community Health & Wellness Service
Make a lasting impact in this fun, interactive and creative class that works with 40 children in kindergarten to 8th grade in an after-school program. Children learn about healthy habits by creating nutritional snacks, crafting art activities, and playing physical activity games.
Wednesdays, 2:00 - 4:00 PM
